This cosmopolitan city is on the shores of the Mediterranean, and a cheap flight to Beirut will get you there in less than 5 hours. It may be an old city, but Beirut has a skyline that will rival other modern cities such as New York or Hong Kong. The majestic Martyrs Statue which sits in Martyrs Square commemorates the Lebanese fighters who died in World War One. The Jeita Grotto, just outside of Beirut, houses a magnificent series of caves, as well as the largest stalactite in the world. Visitors can access these caves through walkways and tunnels. Stroll along the General De Gaulle Avenue (more popularly known as The Corniche) in the late afternoon, and enjoy a spectacular sunset while quenching your thirst with a drink at one of the beach clubs. Shopaholics can head to Burj Hammoud or the Sunday Market for a bargain, or Rue Verdun and downtown Beirut for some high end boutiques.
