What you need to know before you book your airfare and tickets
Jump on a cheap flight to Warsaw for a break filled with history and culture. The Polish capital has an unfortunate image as a grey, depressing city, but you will find lots of interesting niches once you take a look around. Flights to Warsaw will probably land at Frederic Chopin Airport. After that, it is a simple matter of hopping on a bus or train to get to the city centre. Most visitors to Warsaw tend to flock to the Stare Miasto (Old Town). Grab a seat at one of the cafes lining Castle Square and watch as the city rushes by. The Old Town Market Place is a great spot for shopping, and the Barbican is a popular tourist attraction these days. For an unusual (and slightly spooky) experience, you may want to visit the sprawling Powazki Cemetery. The necropolis is filled with the graves of soldiers and civilians killed in various wars. Take some time out to have a meal in one of the few remaining milk bars (bar mleczny) in Warsaw before you leave. These plastic-encrusted cafes are a leftover from communist days, and still serve cheap and often tasty meals. Tuck into traditional Polish dishes such as cabbage soup, or plates of pierogi (dumplings), often served with a dollop of sour cream.
