If you're thinking of just using Manila as a base to explore the rest of the Philippines, then maybe you should think again. It might not have the best of reputations, but it does have so much to offer that it does deserve to stay here for at least a couple of days. It offers lots of history, good restaurants and some very peculiar sights. Book a tour to the Intramuros and discover the vast history of Manila. This fortress was built in 1571 by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi and was under attack by several countries many times until it was devastated in WWII by the Americans. It's still worth a visit though as you can see the remnants of the walls as well as some of the buildings that were located within the city walls. Visit Casa Manila which was renovated by Imelda Marcos. It's a colonial home that houses many colonial pieces of furniture. Head to Chinatown for some great dim sum and bargain shopping. Don't miss out on the Chinese Cemetery. It's a burial ground for the wealthy as you will notice by all the luxurious mod cons that some of the mausoleums hold. There are even some that have toilets. Go figure! For dinner check out Barbara's. The décor is very 19th century Europe and the food is great. Especially the lunch buffet is particular popular. Head to 604 Café and Gallery if you want a side of art with your drinks. There are no chairs as people tend to sit on pillows on the floor.
