What you need to know before you book your airfare and tickets
Dive into history with a cheap flight to Damascus. The Syrian capital is said to be the oldest continually inhabited city in the world. Although there are plenty of ruins and historic monuments here, Damascus is also a bustling, modern city with its fair share of glossy skyscrapers. A visit to the Old City, surrounded by walls centuries old, is a must for visitors to Damascus. The cool, narrow alleys, stark houses, and secret green gardens will take you straight back into the medieval days. The Street Called Straight was given a mention in the Bible, and is one of the main thoroughfares through the Old City. The ruins of the Citadel of Damascus can be found in the northeast corner, with the Al-Hamidiyya Souk at the other end of the Old City. Step in here and head straight for the legendary Bakdash, an ice cream parlour that first opened for business in 1885. Treat yourself to cone filled with sticky Booza, topped with pistachio. Bakdash is so famous that even presidents are brought here for a taste of the semolina based ice cream. Hike up to the top of Mount Qasioun for spectacular views over Damascus, and reward yourself with a tasty meal at one of the many restaurants on the mountain.
