What you need to know before you book your airfare and tickets
The capital of Norway has everything you need for an exciting weekend getaway. Mountains and sea are nearby and it boasts a great selection of shops, cafes and trendy eateries. Start your trip with a walk around the city centre. Head towards the water front where you'll find many outdoor cafes and restaurants at Aker Brygge. It's a converted ship yard that now houses shops, cafes and restaurants. On the other side of the harbour from Aker Brygge you'll find Akershus Castle and Fortress. It sits right on a hill next with sweeping views across the harbour and the rest of the city. It's a great place to spend an afternoon and learn a little bit more about the history of Oslo. Oslo is of course the home of the famous painter Edvard Much who painted the well known 'Scream' which was stole a couple of years ago. There is an entire museum dedicated to the artist. The Munch Museum hold a large collection of his work that he left to the city when he died. And yes, the Scream has been recovered and can now be seen here as well. If you want to see more than just pieces of art by Edvard Munch then head to the National Gallery. There are paintings by artists such as Renoir, Cezanne, Picasso, etc. Norwegian cuisine might not be world famous, but there surely are plenty of restaurants to chose from. For Norwegian food with a twist, try Det Gamle Raadhus. There is a back garden for a romantic al fresco dinner. Another option is the no frills Palace Grill. The decor might be a bit simple, but the food is sublime.
