What you need to know before you book your airfare and tickets
Get a taste of the Burgundian life style and book a cheap ticket to Ghent. The best way to absorb the atmosphere of this lively Flemish city is to do a walking tour around the city centre. It has an abundance of Gothic architecture from Medieval times. Don't miss out on visiting the St Bavo Cathedral that towers above the city's skyline. Another must see sight is the Gravensteen castle that dates back to the 12th century. It was built by the then ruling counts of Flanders who needed a place to stay for a few months before moving on to other parts of the county. Possibly the most entertaining part of this castle is the torture room that has some interesting medieval torture devices on display. If you happen to be here on a Friday, do wander around the many stalls of the Friday market. It's held on the main square in town under the watchful eyes of the statue of Jacob van Artevelde, a local hero in the history of Ghent. For some picturesque views, take a stroll along the river on the Graslei and the Korenlei. The buildings that are lining the river on these two streets truly look like they have been yanked out of a fairy tale land. Your visit to Ghent to visit wouldn't be complete without trying some local cuisine. Enjoy some waterzooi in an Art Deco setting at het Pakhuis. This former warehouse is a great place to spend a romantic candlelit dinner. To get your hands on a chilled pint of Belgian beer, head to cafe 't Zuiden van Europa on the main market square. The cafe also exhibits paintings from local artists. Or try the Belga Queen on the Graslei. They have a wide range of local beers and on the weekend a DJ livens up the atmosphere. A great place to spend a fun evening.
