What you need to know before you book your airfare and tickets
Next time you book your cheap flight to Gerona to lie on a beach on the Costa Brava, do pay a visit to the city itself. True, the coast line and the beaches are beckoning, but Gerona really is an interesting city that shouldn't be left out of your intinerary. The old centre which you will find within the ancient roman walls has narrow streets where you can breathe in the historic atmosphere. Numerous sights are also located within the heart of town. Follow the Archaeological walk which starts in the north of town and takes you through the heart of Gerona. You will find the remains of a Roman road which lead from Gerona to Tarragona back in the day. You will pass the cathedral which towers high above the other buildings in the city. It stands on the site where the Moors built a mosque back in the day. The current building was constructed by architect Jaume Fabre from Majorca. It's a pretty impressive structure that is certainly worth the climb up the 86 steps. The walk also takes you to the old Jewish Quarter in town. Learn more about Gerona's Jewish history at the Catalan Jewish Museum. For a more relaxing visit, take a plunge in the ancient Arabic baths or Banys Arabic as they are called. You've probably worked up an appetite after all this, so for some tasty local Catalan food, head to El Seller de Can Roca. If you do want to lie on a beach for a few days, steer clear from resort towns such as Lloret de Mar and Tossa de Mar. Instead head to Peratallada, Begur and Pals which are a lot quieter and more tradtional without the booking discos and English pubs. Or take a drive along the coast to take in the inspiring views. Stop for lunch at one of the many traditional fishing villages such as S'agaro, Cadaques and Llafranc. An absolute must if you're in this area is a visit to the quirky Dali museum in Figueras to learn more about the life and work of this Spanish artist.
