What you need to know before you book your airfare and tickets
Known as Halikarnassus during ancient Greek times Bodrum on the Turkish Riviera now is the ultimate destination to ad a little culture to your beach holiday. Although there is no city beach in Bodrum, idyllic beaches such as the ones near the quaint village of Torba can be easily reached in a dolmus, the ubiquitous mini vans that will take you anywhere. History buffs should not leave Bodrum without before visiting the remnants of the mausoleum of Mausolus, one of the 7 wonders of the Ancient World. Another major sight not to be missed is Bodrum Castle, which dates back to the 1400's. It's set on top of a hill and the views across the city and the marina are superb. Don't forget to have a look at the meticulously maintained garden within the castle grounds. Stroll around the market in the town centre to stock up on your souvenirs and have some ultra sweet tea offered by the friendly stall keepers.
There is no lack of nightlife in this town so no need to while away in your hotel room after the sun goes down. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from and many offer authentic Turkish cuisine. There is also a wide variety of restaurants with a more universal cuisine, if you're less adventurous. Try a Turkish pizza at Sunger Pizza. They also serve other traditional Turkish dishes. It's a popular spot for locals as well. Always a sign that the food must be good.
Take a peek at the oldest bar in Bodrum called Hadigari. Torches are posted at the entrance and drinks can be taken on the terrace that looks out onto the sea. For a crazy night out hop on the Halikarnassus Club ferry that will take you to this massive night club where you can dance till the early hours of dawn.
