What you need to know before you book your airfare and tickets
Disembark from your cheap flight to Bergen and discover the majestic fjords that surround it. Bergen itself is a scenic town filled with history and culture, so it is worth enjoying some time here before you go off to explore the great outdoors. The World Heritage listed remains of Bryggen lets you get a glimpse into life in medieval Bergen. The Bryggen Museum has an admirable collection of artefacts, as well as a section known as Old Bergen which reconstructs Bergen buildings from the 17th to 19th centuries. Leave the dark, narrow alleyways of Bryggen and head for more spacious surroundings on Floien Mountain. The Floibanen Funicular trundles to the mountaintop and alights on a platform that provides amazing views over Bergen. Stroll down the mountain side and make your way to the Fish Market. The stalls here sell all manner of wet, scaly and clawed creatures, as well as a selection of souvenirs. Fish fans can head across the street to Sostrene Hagelin for seafood. The cafe offers heart shaped fried fish cakes, fish burgers and sandwiches, fish balls and pudding, as well as the ubiquitous fish soup. If you are starting to feel chilly, a visit to the Norwegian Knitting Industry Museum might warm you up. The museum is housed in the first knitwear factory in the country, and provides an interesting insight into this important industry.
